PRACTICE NON-HARMING

Ahimsa, many believe, is the foundation for the path of yoga. The word is derived from Sanskrit, meaning “not to harm.” In India, the practice of non-harming or nonviolence is considered a cardinal virtue for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. The sacred text, the Chandogya Upanishad, dated from the eighth or seventh century B.C.E., lists ahimsa among the five essential virtues that also include truthfulness, sincerity, charity, and penance. In practice, ahimsa dictates that you view all living beings (humans, animals, and all life forms) as a reflection of the Divine. Speaking ill of another, criticizing, or engaging in dark thoughts about another only injures the self. Therefore, you must take care to do no harm to other creatures through your thoughts, words, or deeds.

Consider switching to a vegetarian, vegan, or raw food diets, but check with your physician first. Purchase an assortment of colored vegetables. Before you start prepping them, hold an assortment in your hands and give thanks for the abundant Universe that provides the means for not harming another creature’s life to nourish your own.
